The city
Founded on a rocky islet, Saint-Malo lived for centuries off the sea and off those who dared it. The King’s corsairs, shipowners, deep-sea sailors: the walled city built its fortune on voyages that sometimes made England tremble.
Rebuilt stone by stone after the bombardments of August 1944, it found its granite face again without losing its soul. To this day the ramparts, the shipowners’ mansions and the narrow lanes tell four centuries of stories to anyone who knows how to listen.
“Why is there a cannonball in that wall?”
“A souvenir of the English bombardment of 1693: several façades in Saint-Malo still carry the scars…”
