The idea Cities to explore About us Get the app Lire en français

It began with something anyone who has visited a city steeped in history knows: you walk past extraordinary façades without knowing what they have seen. The paper guide never leaves your pocket. And the walks on offer ask you to book, to be there at ten, to stay with the group.

We wanted both at once: to have the city told to you the way someone who knows it by heart would tell it, while you stay in charge of your own hour and your own path. And for that story to handle a siege in 1693 as readily as the question that comes to you right now, in front of this particular façade.

So we did what, as far as we know, nobody else does: we treat every city as a work to be published. Months of archive research, authored writing, a translation taken up language by language, mapping accurate to the metre. Saint-Malo is the first. It will not be the last.

A city is not a stage set. It is a *memory* left standing. Our craft is to make it *speak*: accurately, elegantly, and at *your* own pace.

Our commitments

What we hold ourselves to.

Every screen, every sentence, every walk has to pass through this. When one of these gives way, we do not ship, even if it means pushing back a city’s opening.

Complete freedom

No guide, no timetable, no booking, no meeting point. You start when you like, you break for a coffee, you pick it up again after the tide. The walk waits for you, never the other way round.

Time made to measure

90 minutes, 2 hours, 3 hours, half a day, a full day: the route is built around the time you give the city, not the reverse. No imposed itinerary, no wasted minute.

The right spot

The story starts where it happened, not three streets away. Granite under your hand, the wind half covering a sentence: it comes through your legs and your ears, not through a screen you read standing up.

Memory

At the end of the walk, a personal account of your day is written: your places, your questions, your detours. It stays in your account for good. The walk goes on living after the walk.

Cultural quality

Stories written by authors, facts cross-checked against several sources. When the legend embellishes the archive, we tell you both, and we say which is which. And no riddles, no challenges, no stopwatch: the city is not a playground.

The workshop

How a city becomes
a piece of work.

Treating every city as a work to be published is not a slogan, it is a method. Here is what happens between a silent city and a city that whispers.

01 · Research

Archives, historians’ work, local memoirs: we build a body of research belonging to that city alone. Every fact we will tell has to be traceable to a source.

02 · Writing

Authors turn historical material into narrative: a tone, a breath, characters. The city stops being a list of dates and becomes a story you can follow.

03 · Languages

A story translated word for word loses its wordplay, its street names and its rhythm. Every city is taken up language by language, as many as seven, with a separate version written for under-12s.

04 · Mapping

Every place is mapped to the metre: the narration has to start exactly where the story happened, not three streets away. Routes are composed for each walk length.

05 · The body of answers

We prepare the city to answer: the research feeds the live answers to your questions, in the precise context of where you are standing.

06 · The ground itself

Finally, we walk. Every route is tested on site, in all weathers, until it lands right at every street corner. Only then is the city ready to speak.

In all honesty

One city at a time,
and it takes a while.

We open few cities, and we open them slowly. It is the criticism we hear most often, and we stand by it: a city needs months of archives, writing, translation and walking on site before it holds up. We would rather tell you a city is not ready than sell you a route that recites dates.

That is also why the cities page announces four different states rather than one reassuring list. You will see exactly where each one stands, including the ones we do not yet know will ever open. See where each city stands →
